How Krobo Glass Beads Are Made
Krobo glass beads are created using a centuries-old technique passed down through generations. Artisans from Kroboland crush recycled glass bottles and other materials into a fine powder, carefully pouring it into clay molds. These molds are baked in traditional kilns to fuse the glass powder into solid beads. After cooling, each bead is meticulously polished and sometimes hand-painted, showcasing the incredible talent of Ghanaian beadmakers.
Trade beads hold a deep cultural and historical significance across Africa. They were historically used as currency, symbols of status, and as adornments in ceremonies. Today, Krobo beads continue this legacy while promoting sustainability and environmental awareness.
