X-Large Translucent Recycled Krobo Glass Beads – African Trade Beads

Introducing a beautiful strand of X-Large translucent powder glass African beads, handmade by the skilled artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. These beads are a modern interpretation of the Venetian glass trade beads cherished in Africa’s rich trading history. Each bead is meticulously crafted using eco-friendly techniques, ensuring a blend of artistry and sustainability.

Details:

  • Strand Length: Approximately 23 1/4 inches (59 cm)
  • Bead Size: 21–22 mm in diameter
  • Material: 100% recycled glass

Made from finely crushed recycled glass bottles and other glass items, these beads are carefully shaped in molds before being fired in kilns. The result is an exquisite translucent finish that gives each bead a unique character.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Technique:

The Krobo people of Ghana employ a centuries-old process to create these striking beads. Recycled glass is ground into a fine powder and poured into clay molds, often treated with natural coloring agents. The molds are then heated in traditional kilns, where the glass fuses into stunning beads. Each bead is shaped, polished, and drilled entirely by hand, a testament to the Krobo community's enduring craftsmanship.

Significance of Trade Beads in Africa:

Trade beads like these have deep cultural and historical roots in Africa, symbolizing wealth, status, and heritage. Once used in bartering and ceremonial practices, today they continue to embody the beauty of African artistry while promoting sustainable craftsmanship.
