History & Craftsmanship

Chevron beads, also known as Rosetta beads, originated in Venice in the late 15th century. They were produced using the drawn cane method-layering molten glass of various colors in a star mold, pulling it into rods, slicing the rods into beads, and then grinding or reheating them to reveal the distinct starburst patterns at each end.

These particular beads were reheated after slicing, which softened the surface and enhanced the internal layering, creating what is referred to as the onion skin or floral effect. This method gives the beads a slightly translucent, swirling appearance that adds depth and complexity to the glass.

Used in African trade in the early 1900s, yellow Chevrons with onion skin interiors are quite rare and were highly valued in local markets for their vibrant beauty and symbolism. Today, they are prized by collectors for their uniqueness, craftsmanship, and cultural importance.
