Experience the beauty and tradition of Krobo craftsmanship with this stunning strand of new glass fragment African beads, created by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads, which emulate the historic "Dutch Annular" glass trade beads, are perfect for jewelry making or as a unique collectible.

  • Length: 20 1/2" (52 cm)
  • Bead Size: Approximately 11 mm in diameter

Crafted from recycled glass fragments, these beads are meticulously handmade, ensuring each strand is one-of-a-kind. The process involves placing broken pieces of glass into clay molds and firing them at high temperatures, resulting in beautiful translucent beads that retain some of their original colors and variegated appearance.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Krobo beads are created through a detailed and traditional process:

  1. Collection and Preparation: Glass bottles and other items are collected, cleaned, and broken into small fragments.
  2. Molding: The fragments are placed into clay molds, determining the beads' shape and size.
  3. Firing: The molds are fired in a kiln, fusing the glass fragments without completely melting them, preserving their unique translucency and colors.
  4. Finishing: Once cooled, the beads are polished or refined to smooth out any rough edges.

These vibrant beads are not only a testament to the artisans' skill but also hold cultural significance in Ghanaian society, often used in ceremonies and as symbols of status and identity.
