History and Craft of Venetian Chevron Beads

Chevron beads-also known as Rosetta beads-were first developed in Venice during the late 15th century. Crafted by the master glassmakers of Murano, they were produced using the cane drawing technique, where multiple layers of differently colored glass were fused together, pulled into rods, and cut to reveal intricate patterns through grinding and polishing.

Twisted Chevrons like this one are especially desirable due to their rarity and the additional artistry involved in their creation. These beads played a significant role in African trade, valued as both currency and personal adornment. Their cultural, artistic, and historical significance continues to make them treasured collectibles around the world.
