Rare Antique Venetian Millefiori African Trade Beads, Glass Mosaic
These four rare and beautiful antique Venetian millefiori mosaic glass trade beads are a stunning example of early 20th-century craftsmanship. Made in Venice, these beads were used in the African trade in the early 1900s, contributing to their unique historical significance.
- Size of beads: 15 mm in length
- Diameter: 8-9 mm
- Condition: Very good
- Lightly beveled ends
- Very light chipping at the ends (see photos)
The intricate technique behind these beads, known as the mosaic or millefiori technique, involves layering molten glass canes, which are then cut into cross-sections to reveal colorful patterns. Venetian artisans perfected this method, and these beads became highly sought-after in West African markets, particularly in Ghana, where they were traded for goods and held as symbols of wealth.
Trade beads like these played a crucial role in Africa’s cultural and economic exchanges, influencing local jewelry traditions and aesthetics.
