Rare Antique Venetian Millefiori Mosaic Beads – African Trade, 1900s

Rare Antique Venetian Millefiori Mosaic Beads – African Trade, 1900s

These four beautiful and rare antique Venetian millefiori mosaic glass trade beads date back to the early 1900s, reflecting the exquisite craftsmanship of Venetian artisans. Each bead features molded murrine and trail decoration, making them an extraordinary find for collectors of historic African trade beads. Referenced in Picard (Volume VI, p.50, bead 1239), these beads were once part of the African trade, traveling through history and continents. Their vibrant, intricate patterns highlight the beauty of Venetian glassmaking traditions.

  • Bead Length: 10-11 mm
  • Bead Diameter: 11-12 mm
  • Condition: Excellent condition; one bead shows very light chipping at the ends (please refer to the photos).

Millefiori beads, known for their elaborate floral patterns, were crafted using the mosaic glass technique, where slices of colored glass rods (murrine) were meticulously layered and fused together. These beads were not just decorative; they played a significant role in trade across Africa, particularly in Ghana, where they were used as currency and symbols of wealth and power.
