Rare Antique Venetian Millefiori Mosaic Glass Trade Beads, African Trade, 17-18mm
Discover a beautiful pair of rare, antique Venetian Millefiori mosaic glass trade beads dating back to the early 1900s. These exceptional beads, referenced in Picard, Volume VI, p.52, bead 1307, are a stunning example of African trade beads that were widely used during the African trade era.
- Size: 17-18 mm x 10 mm
- Condition: Very good, with lightly beveled edges and very minor chipping at the ends (see photos for details).
Each bead was meticulously crafted in Venice, Italy using the traditional Millefiori (meaning "thousand flowers") technique. This delicate process involves the layering and fusing of colorful glass canes, which are then sliced to reveal intricate floral or geometric patterns. These vibrant beads, cherished for their beauty and craftsmanship, traveled to Africa, where they were used as currency and worn as symbols of wealth and status, particularly in regions like Ghana.
These Millefiori beads are not only a testament to the artistry of Venetian glassmakers but also hold significant cultural value as part of Africa's rich history of trade.
