History & Craftsmanship of Kiffa Beads
Kiffa beads, also known as Murakad beads, are among the most exquisite African trade beads. Originating from Mauritania, they were traditionally made by skilled women artisans using powdered glass, natural binders, and fine metal tools—all without a kiln. Each bead is carefully hand-painted with elaborate geometric and symbolic patterns, reflecting the cultural heritage of the region.
Their rarity and intricate designs make Kiffa beads valuable collector’s items today. Due to their fragile nature and labor-intensive production, authentic antique Kiffa beads are becoming increasingly scarce.
