Here is a rare old large-size 4-layer “Yellow Jacket” Venetian Chevron glass trade bead, crafted in the late 1800s to early 1900s and used in the African trade. This striking bead earns its nickname from the bold yellow and black color combination reminiscent of a yellow jacket wasp-making it a prized and memorable addition to any bead collection.

The bead features sharp, layered starburst patterns in yellow, white, and black over a rich core, formed in the classic Chevron style by Murano glassmakers. Its elongated cylindrical form gives it an elegant profile that stands out in any arrangement or display.

  • Bead Size: 23 mm (length) x 8 mm (diameter)
  • Condition: Very good antique condition
  • Note: Light chipping at the ends (see photos); does not affect structural integrity

History & Craftsmanship

Venetian Chevron beads-also known as Rosetta beads-are some of the most iconic and historically significant glass beads ever made. Originating from Murano, Venice in the late 15th century, these beads were produced using the complex drawn cane method. Multiple layers of colored molten glass were poured into star-shaped molds, drawn into canes, and then sliced into beads. The ends were then ground or polished to reveal the characteristic star pattern.

Beads like this “Yellow Jacket” were highly sought after in African markets, where they were used as trade currency and symbols of status and wealth. The vibrant color palette and rare large size make this a standout piece in any serious bead collection.
