Handmade Mauritanian Kiffa Glass Bead – A Collector’s Treasure
This rare, old red Kiffa bead is a stunning example of traditional Mauritanian craftsmanship. Handmade in the town of Kiffa during the early-to-mid 1900s, this authentic glass trade bead showcases a deep red hue, symbolizing prestige and artistry. Measuring 25 x 14 x 8 mm, this bead is in very good condition, with one corner carefully restored by a skilled Kiffa bead maker (see photo 3).
Kiffa beads are crafted using a unique powder glass technique, shaped and decorated with finely ground glass mixed with natural binders. These exquisite beads were worn as status symbols and treasured as heirloom pieces across West Africa.
The History & Value of Kiffa Beads
Named after the Mauritanian town where they originated, Kiffa beads (also known as Murakad beads) are one of the most delicate and intricate forms of African powder glass beads. Their designs, rich in cultural symbolism, were passed down through generations of female artisans. Unlike other glass beads, Kiffa beads are traditionally made without kilns, using open-fire techniques and simple tools, making them extraordinarily rare and valuable.
