History & Craftsmanship:
Fustat, Egypt, was a renowned glassmaking center during the Islamic period, famous for its vibrant glass beads and intricate designs. These mosaic beads were made using the canework technique, where colored glass rods were fused together, sliced into cross-sections, and then shaped into beads. The eye motif was believed to offer protection against the evil eye, making these beads not only beautiful but also culturally significant.
During the height of the Islamic trade networks, beads like this traveled across Africa, the Middle East, and even Asia, playing a crucial role in commerce and cultural exchange. Today, authentic Fustat beads are highly prized by collectors due to their rarity, historical significance, and exceptional craftsmanship.
