History & Craft of Chevron Beads
Venetian Chevron beads—also known as Rosetta beads—originated in Murano, Italy, in the late 15th century. These beads were crafted by fusing multiple layers of colored glass into a cane, which was then ground to reveal the distinctive star or chevron pattern. The intricate process, known as the cane drawing technique, is a hallmark of Murano’s legendary glassmaking tradition.
Beads like this were traded extensively throughout West Africa, where they were not only used in commerce but also worn as status symbols and used in rituals. Their beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural relevance make them prized collectibles with lasting value.
