Striped Dog Bone Chevron Beads | Rare 4 Layer Venetian Pair

Striped Dog Bone Chevron Beads | Rare 4 Layer Venetian Pair

This is a beautiful matching pair of rare old 4-layer striped Chevron "Dog Bone" Venetian glass trade beads, made in the early 1900s for the African trade. These distinctive beads feature the coveted “dog bone” shape-gently flared at both ends with a raised center-paired with bold layered striping, making them a standout in any collection.

The striped chevron design includes alternating layers of deep color, typically red, white, and blue, revealing crisp star patterns at each end. The compact, sculptural form and perfect symmetry make this pair ideal for collectors, designers, or historians of antique beads.

History & Craftsmanship

Chevron beads, also known as Rosetta beads, are among the most iconic trade beads ever produced. Originating from the island of Murano in Venice in the late 15th century, they were made using the drawn cane method: layers of molten colored glass were stacked in star-shaped molds, pulled into long rods, sliced into beads, and then ground or polished to expose the layered starburst pattern on each end.

The Dog Bone shape is an uncommon and desirable form, created to stand out from traditional cylindrical Chevrons. These beads were exported to Africa and used as currency and personal adornment, especially during the early 20th century. Striped versions in matched pairs are particularly rare and sought after by collectors today.

This unique pair is not just a beautiful piece of wearable history-it is also a reflection of the global artistry and cultural exchange embodied in the trade bead legacy.
