Explore the vibrant world of African trade beads with our stunning strand of fancy powder glass beads handcrafted in Ghana by the talented artisans of Kroboland. These exquisite beads are designed to imitate the old Venetian "EYE" trade beads, showcasing intricate patterns and vivid colors that add a touch of history and culture to your collection.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 24 1/4" (61.5 cm)
  • Bead Size: Approximately 9 mm in diameter

Our beads are made from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, ground into a fine powder and meticulously molded to create these beautiful beads. Each bead is 100% handmade, ensuring a unique and authentic piece.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Decoration Process

What sets these fancy beads apart is their detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They may use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, adding to their charm and uniqueness.

Firing Technique

Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final form. This traditional method not only enhances the durability of the beads but also preserves the vibrant colors and intricate patterns.

Importance of Trade Beads

Trade beads have played a significant role in African history and culture. They were used as a form of currency and were symbols of wealth and status. Today, these Ghana glass beads continue to be highly valued for their beauty and cultural significance.
