These Awale Chevron beads belong to the extended family of Venetian trade beads, distinguished by their simple yet bold striped patterns and cylindrical drawn-glass construction. The term "Awale" refers to a popular style of smaller striped Chevron beads that were widely used in West Africa and often incorporated into traditional jewelry and garments.

History and Significance of Venetian Chevron Beads

Chevron beads-also known as Rosetta beads-originated in Venice during the 15th century, primarily on the glassmaking island of Murano. These beads were created through the cane drawing technique or by pulling molten glass into long tubes and slicing them into smaller beads. The star or stripe patterns were then revealed through polishing and finishing techniques.

Beads like these were in high demand throughout Africa during the colonial era and earlier, serving as both currency and cultural adornment. Their craftsmanship, history, and aesthetic continue to make them treasured collectibles around the world.
