2-Layer Chevron Beads Strand – Antique Venetian Glass, 25" Long

This is a nice old matching strand of 2-layer Venetian Chevron glass trade beads, a rare and historical style referenced in Picard, Volume VII, page 101, strand 18. These beautiful beads were used in African trade during the early 1900s and remain highly sought after by collectors today.

  • Length of Strand: Approximately 25 inches (63.5 cm)
  • Bead Size: 5–7 mm in diameter
  • Condition: Excellent antique condition
  • Note: A few beads are lightly chipped; see photos for detail

This strand of 2-layer Chevron beads showcases the early simplicity of Venetian beadmaking. The internal and external layers of color, often in blue and white or red and white combinations, are fused using the traditional drawn glass technique, creating a clean and subtle star or stripe effect on the ends. The round, consistent shape of these beads and the matching strand layout make them perfect for jewelry design, display, or collection.

💎 History, Value & Craftsmanship

Chevron beads-also known as Rosetta beads-originated on the island of Murano, Venice, in the late 15th century. These iconic beads are created by layering molten colored glass into a cane, pulling it into long rods, and cutting it into beads. The ends are ground to expose the layered design-usually a star or stripe pattern. While most well-known Chevrons feature 4 to 7 layers, these early 2-layer beads are rarer and represent a more minimalist yet historical phase of the art form. They were extensively used as currency and adornment in African trade networks.

This well-matched, documented strand is a fine example of Venetian bead history and African trade heritage-elegant, collectible, and timeless.
