History, Value, and Craftsmanship of Chevron Beads

Venetian Chevron beads originated in Murano, Italy, and have been crafted since the late 15th century. They were made using the caneworking technique, where layers of colored glass were fused, drawn into rods, then cut and polished to reveal their multi-layered star or stripe patterns. While most Chevrons have 4–7 layers, 2-layer examples are less common and highly collectible in matched strands.

During the early 1900s, these beads were traded extensively across West Africa, where they were valued for their beauty and used as symbols of status, wealth, and cultural exchange. Today, antique Chevron beads like this strand are treasured for their artistic quality and historical significance.
