Antique Venetian Lampwork Glass Trade Beads, Compound “American Flag” Beads, 27.5"

Antique Venetian Lampwork Glass Trade Beads, Compound “American Flag” Beads, 27.5"

Presenting a beautiful and matching strand of Antique Venetian lampwork glass trade beads, often referred to as "American Flag" or "Manhattan" beads. Unlike traditional Chevron beads, these are meticulously crafted compound wound glass beads rather than drawn beads, as noted in Picard, Volume VII, bead 947. These rare beads represent an iconic part of trade history, especially within Africa during the 1800s.

This strand is a stunning example of compound Venetian trade beads, which were highly prized across Africa. Although in very good condition, a few beads do have minor chipping, which is typical for pieces of this age and adds to their historical charm.

  • Strand Length: 27 1/2" (71 cm)
  • Bead Size: 13-15 mm in diameter
  • Condition: Very good, with minor chipping on a few beads

These Venetian glass beads were originally made in Venice using the traditional lampwork technique, also known as wound glass bead-making. This method involves wrapping molten glass around a metal rod, allowing for intricate designs and shapes. Venetian artisans produced these beads in the 1800s, and they became an essential part of African trade, particularly in West African regions like Ghana. These beads served not only as currency but also as valuable cultural artifacts, representing power, wealth, and social status.

Today, Venetian trade beads like these hold immense historical and cultural significance for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
