The History and Craft of Venetian Chevron Beads
Venetian Chevron beads-also known as Rosetta beads-originated in the late 15th century on the island of Murano. They were crafted using the cane drawing technique, a meticulous glassmaking method where artisans layered different colored glasses, shaped the canes, and cut them into beads. Grinding and polishing revealed the star or stripe patterns that define the Chevron aesthetic.
These beads were extensively traded across Africa, especially in West Africa, where they were used for barter, cultural exchange, and ceremonial purposes. Their beauty and craftsmanship made them symbols of wealth and prestige, and they remain highly valued by collectors and historians today.
