History & Craftsmanship
Chevron beads-also known as Rosetta beads-are among the most recognizable of all Venetian trade beads. They were first produced on the island of Murano in the late 15th century using the “drawn cane” method, where multiple layers of colored molten glass were shaped into star molds, drawn into rods, cut into segments, and ground to reveal their layered starburst ends.
The Dog Bone shape is a rare variation of the Chevron form and was intentionally crafted for its unique contour and pleasing symmetry. These beads were widely used in the African trade during the early 20th century and were cherished not only for their beauty but also as status symbols and forms of exchange.
This matching pair is a wonderful example of antique Venetian artistry and the vibrant trade history between Europe and Africa.
