Presented here is a rare and beautiful strand of fifteen old black striped 4-layer Venetian Chevron glass trade beads, referenced in Picard, Volume VII, page 43, strand 7. These highly collectible beads were produced in the early 1900s and are prized for their dark, rich coloration and precise layering.
The beads feature a rare black base with crisp red and white internal layers, forming a classic Chevron starburst pattern at each end. Their petite size and subtle yet striking contrast make them ideal for collectors, jewelry designers, or anyone drawn to authentic trade bead artistry.

History & Craftsmanship
Chevron beads-also called Rosetta beads-originated in Venice in the late 15th century and were meticulously crafted using the "drawn cane" method. Layers of molten glass were stacked in molds to form a star-shaped pattern, then drawn into canes, cooled, and sliced into beads. The ends were often ground or polished to reveal their iconic multi-pointed star design.
By the 19th and early 20th centuries, these beads became widely used in African trade, where they were valued not only as decorative items but also as currency and markers of social status. Black striped Chevrons are among the rarer color variants and are especially sought after in matched strands such as this.
This group offers a rare chance to own a historically documented and visually striking set of authentic Venetian trade beads.
