Offered is a rare and beautiful set of five old 4-layer striped brick Chevron Venetian glass trade beads, made in the early 1900s and used in African trade. These antique beads are notable for their deep reddish-brick coloration and bold layered striping, giving them a rich, earthy presence that’s highly sought after by collectors.

The brick red base is accented by sharp white and blue layered starburst patterns at the ends-created using the traditional Chevron glassmaking method. Their compact size and vibrant coloring make them ideal for both display and jewelry-making.

History & Craftsmanship

Chevron beads, also known as Rosetta beads, are some of the most iconic Venetian trade beads, originating in Murano, Italy in the late 15th century. Crafted using the “drawn cane” technique, layers of differently colored molten glass were stacked into star molds, pulled into rods, and sliced into beads. These beads were then ground or faceted to expose the beautiful layered star patterns on each end.

Beads like these were exported to Africa during the height of the trade era and were highly valued in local economies, where they were exchanged for goods and worn as jewelry signifying wealth and social status. The rare striped brick color combination seen in this set adds to its collectible value, as it is less commonly found compared to traditional blue or green Chevrons.
