History & Craftsmanship

These Chevron beads, also known as Rosetta beads, were made in Venice using the traditional cane-drawing method that began in the late 15th century. Artisans stacked molten glass in layers-often alternating in colors-into star-shaped molds, then drew the cane into rods before slicing them into beads. After cutting, the beads were faceted and polished to reveal their iconic layered star patterns on each end.

The 4-layer construction seen here was common in early 20th-century trade beads. These particular beads were part of the robust African trade, where they served as valuable currency and decorative items signifying status and wealth.

Striped Chevrons in this slim, elongated style are less frequently found in sets of this quality and condition, making them a fantastic find for collectors and designers alike.
