Antique Venetian Millefiori Mosaic African Trade Beads, 12-13mm Glass
Discover a set of five stunning Antique Venetian Millefiori Mosaic Glass Trade Beads, crafted in Venice during the early 1900s. These rare beads were traded across Africa, particularly in regions like Ghana, where they became highly prized by local tribes.
- Size: 12-13 mm in length, 7 mm in diameter
- Condition: Very good. Some beads exhibit light beveling, and a few have minor chips at the ends (see photos).
These beautifully patterned mosaic beads feature intricate designs, showcasing the fine craftsmanship of Venetian glassmakers. Millefiori (meaning "thousand flowers") is a unique technique that layers different colored glass canes to create flower-like patterns within the bead.
Venetian millefiori beads played a significant role in the African trade, particularly in West Africa, where they were used as currency and prized for their beauty. Ghana, in particular, saw these beads as symbols of wealth and social status, and they were often exchanged in important ceremonies. Today, these antique trade beads hold historical significance and are sought after by collectors worldwide.
