About the Krobo Bead-Making Tradition
The art of making Krobo beads dates back centuries and is a cornerstone of Ghanaian heritage. Using fragments of recycled glass, artisans in Kroboland follow a meticulous process:
- Collection & Preparation: Glass bottles and fragments are gathered, cleaned, and broken into small pieces.
- Molding: The fragments are placed into specially crafted clay molds.
- Firing: These molds are fired in kilns, fusing the glass without fully melting it, resulting in translucent beads with varied hues.
- Finishing: Once cooled, beads are polished and refined to perfection.
These recycled glass beads are vibrant symbols of identity and play an integral role in ceremonies across Ghana. They are also a sustainable way to repurpose materials into wearable art.
