Handmade African Trade Beads – Colorful Krobo Glass Beads Strand
Discover this vibrant and unique strand of recycled Krobo glass beads, beautifully crafted in Kroboland, Ghana (West Africa). Inspired by the intricate designs of old Venetian Fancy Trade Beads, this newly made strand celebrates centuries of African bead-making heritage in a modern form.
Each bead is carefully shaped and painted by hand, showcasing a variety of bright, intricate patterns that reflect the artisan's skill and cultural roots.
- Strand Length: 26" (66 cm) of beads
- Bead Size: 10–17 mm in diameter
These Krobo beads are made using an eco-conscious process. Discarded bottles and other glass objects are crushed into a fine powder, then poured into hand-carved molds. Using traditional ovens, the powdered glass is heated and fused into solid beads. The resulting textures and patterns are not only stunning but also embody the sustainability of African craftsmanship.
Each strand is a tribute to Ghana's time-honored bead-making tradition. The Krobo people are renowned for this artisanal skill, passed down through generations. Their bead-making techniques involve layering colored powdered glass, using cassava stems for creating holes, and painting intricate motifs before final firing. These beads are more than accessories they carry stories, customs, and a rich trade history across the African continent.
Recycled glass beads play a significant role in African trade, ceremonies, and personal adornment. As symbols of identity and status, they continue to connect people, cultures, and communities across time.
