Vibrant African Powder Glass Beads, Imitating Venetian King Beads

Vibrant African Powder Glass Beads, Imitating Venetian King Beads

Discover the artistry and history of African trade beads with this stunning strand of powder glass beads, handmade by the talented artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. These beads imitate the iconic old Venetian "King" glass trade beads, blending tradition with creativity.

Each strand is:

  • 25" (63.5 cm) in length (of beads)
  • Bead size: 15-18 mm
  • Completely handmade

What makes these beads exceptional is the process. The artisans recycle bottles and other discarded glass materials, grinding them into fine powder. This powder is poured into molds to shape the beads before intricate designs are meticulously added.

Decoration Details:
The beads’ vibrant patterns come from a combination of natural dyes, glass fragments, and powdered glass. Using hand tools, artisans carefully etch or paint the beads, creating their detailed motifs. The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln at high temperatures to fuse the glass powder and solidify the designs, giving them their final form.

These Ghana glass beads are more than just jewelry components-they are a testament to sustainable craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of African trade beads. Historically, these beads played a significant role in trade across West Africa, serving as both currency and cultural markers.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
