Artisan Craftsmanship: The Krobo Technique
The creation of these Ghana glass beads is deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of the Krobo people. The process begins with recycled glass, which is crushed into a fine powder. The powder is carefully packed into molds, often with a cassava leaf stem inserted to create the bead hole. After molding, the beads undergo an intricate decoration process where artisans use glass fragments, powdered pigments, and natural dyes to create their signature detailed patterns and vibrant hues.
Firing and Finishing
Once decorated, the beads are fired in a clay kiln, a high-temperature process that fuses the powdered glass and sets the designs permanently. This step is crucial in achieving the beads’ durability and vibrant finish. The result is a unique, beautiful strand of beads that pays homage to the historic significance of African trade beads in global history and art.
Trade beads like these were once a currency of exchange in Africa, valued for their beauty and cultural significance. Today, they remain a cherished symbol of African artistry and sustainability.
