Traditional Mold-Inlaid Powder Glass Technique
These beads were made using the mold-inlaid technique, also known as the “core design” method. This involves crushing old glass bottles into a fine powder, placing the powder into hand-shaped clay molds, and carefully adding colored patterns. The molds are then fired in earthen kilns, fusing the glass into beautifully durable and wearable art.
The Importance of African Trade Beads
For centuries, powder glass beads like these have played a vital role in West African society not just as adornment, but also as currency, cultural identifiers, and ceremonial items. Today, they continue to symbolize sustainability, artistry, and the enduring spirit of the African people.
