These vibrant yellow beads with red, blue, white, and green striping are crafted using recycled bottles and other discarded glass materials, crushed into fine powder. The powder is then poured into clay molds and fired in outdoor kilns, a technique known locally as “core design” or “mold-inlaid” powder glass bead-making. This centuries-old practice, perfected by the Krobo people, honors both sustainability and tradition.
Trade beads hold deep historical significance in Ghana and across West Africa. They were once used as a form of currency and symbolized wealth, social status, and connection during trade and ceremonial events. Today, these beads continue to represent cultural heritage, artistic expression, and the power of sustainable craft.
