Traditional Beadmaking: Mold-Inlaid Powder Glass Technique

These powder glass beads are made using an ancient method still practiced today by the Krobo people of Ghana. First, recycled bottles and discarded glass are ground into fine powder. The powder is then poured into clay molds, often enhanced with local dyes and pigments. For these beads, the artisans used the mold-inlaid method, layering different colors of powdered glass to form intricate striped designs inside the mold. Once filled, the molds are fired in a kiln made from termite clay, fusing the powder into solid, vibrant beads.

This beadmaking tradition plays a vital role in Krobo culture and African trade history. African trade beads like these were historically used for barter, decoration, and ceremonial purposes—making them both functional and symbolic treasures.
