Authentic Ghana Krobo Glass & Brass African Trade Beads – 8–22mm

This stunning 27" strand is a vibrant mix of recycled Krobo glass beads and Ashanti lost wax brass beads, hand-crafted in Ghana, West Africa. Inspired by classic Venetian fancy trade beads, this strand beautifully reflects Africa’s rich beadmaking heritage and artistry. Bead Sizes:

  • Diameter: 8–22 mm
  • Strand Length: Approx. 27" (69 cm)
  • Material: Recycled glass & lost wax brass

These beads are 100% handmade, showcasing the incredible skill of Ghanaian artisans.

Production Techniques:

In Krobo land, recycled glass bottles and household glass are ground into a fine powder. This powder is poured into hand-crafted clay molds and baked in kilns using traditional methods. Natural dyes and symbols are added to create the distinctive, colorful finish seen on these beads. Meanwhile, the Ashanti brass beads are created in the Kumasi region using the age-old lost wax casting technique. Each brass bead starts with a hand-sculpted wax model. A mold is formed around this wax shape and then melted away, allowing molten brass to be poured in. This process is labor-intensive, and the mold is destroyed after a single use, making every bead unique. African trade beads have played a vital role in Ghana and across the continent for centuries. These beads were used as a currency of trade, markers of social status, and storytelling objects passed from generation to generation. Today, they continue to symbolize African identity, resilience, and art.
