The Krobo glass beads are made by crushing recycled bottles and other discarded glass materials into fine powder. This powder is carefully poured into hand-carved clay molds and fired in outdoor kilns using traditional methods passed down through generations. The result is a series of vibrant, durable beads that imitate the historic Venetian fancy trade beads once exchanged across Africa.
Complementing the glass beads are handmade brass beads created in the Ashanti region using the ancient “lost wax” casting technique. Each brass bead begins with a hand-sculpted wax mold that is encased in clay. Once heated, the wax melts away, and molten brass is poured into the space left behind. The mold is broken to reveal each unique bead, meaning no two beads are exactly alike.
These beads are more than just decorative they are part of a legacy. African trade beads played a vital role in cultural and economic exchanges across the continent for centuries. Today, Ghana continues to honor this heritage through beadmaking, preserving traditional methods and sharing its artistry with the world.
