NEW African Trade Beads – Recycled Krobo Glass Beads, 11mm
Discover the beauty of handcrafted artistry with these NEW African trade beads, made by skilled artisans in the Krobo region of Ghana, West Africa. Each strand is composed of vibrant beads made from recycled seed glass, embodying a sustainable and culturally rich tradition.
- Strand Length: Approximately 20 3/4" (52.5 cm) long.
- Bead Size: Approximately 11 mm in diameter.
The artisans of Krobo craft these beads using fragments of recycled glass, often sourced from old windows and glass bottles. This technique produces beads that are more translucent, with unique variegated appearances, unlike the opaque powdered glass beads. The process includes:
- Collection and Preparation: Glass fragments are cleaned and broken into small pieces.
- Molding: The fragments are placed into clay molds, defining the bead shapes.
- Firing: The molds are heated in kilns, fusing the glass pieces while preserving their natural translucency and color.
- Finishing: The cooled beads are polished to remove rough edges, resulting in smooth, stunning pieces.
Krobo beads have deep cultural significance in Ghana, often used in ceremonies and as symbols of status and identity. By purchasing these beads, you support traditional African craftsmanship and sustainable practices.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
