African Trade Beads - Recycled Glass Annular Beads from Ghana
Experience the beauty and craftsmanship of Africa with these recycled glass beads handcrafted in the Krobo region of Ghana. Inspired by traditional "Dutch Annular" trade beads, this strand is a stunning blend of history and artistry.
Each strand measures approximately 21 1/4" (54 cm) long and features beads that are around 12 mm in diameter. Made entirely by hand, these beads showcase the intricate craftsmanship of Krobo artisans.
The process of creating these beads is as fascinating as the beads themselves. Artisans begin by collecting recycled glass fragments from bottles and windows, which are then meticulously cleaned and broken into smaller pieces. The fragments are placed in hand-shaped clay molds that determine the shape and size of the beads. Afterward, the molds are fired in a kiln at high temperatures to fuse the glass. This unique technique preserves the glass's natural translucency and variegated colors, giving each bead its one-of-a-kind look.
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Krobo beads hold deep cultural significance in Ghana. Often used in ceremonies and as symbols of identity and status, they are a testament to the region’s rich traditions. The vibrant colors and intricate designs make them ideal for jewelry, decoration, or as collectible trade beads.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
