These beads are made using a fascinating technique unique to Kroboland. Glass bottles and other discarded glass items are carefully collected, cleaned, and broken into small fragments. The pieces are placed in clay molds that define the beads' distinctive shapes. Firing these molds at high temperatures fuses the fragments, producing beads that retain their natural translucency and unique variegated patterns. Once cooled, the beads are refined to smooth their edges, creating a polished and elegant finish.
Krobo beads are deeply rooted in Ghanaian culture. These beads are used in ceremonies, symbolizing status, identity, and the vibrant artistic heritage of the region. By owning a strand, you not only support sustainable practices but also celebrate the timeless art of beadmaking in Africa.
