The Traditional Technique of Powder Glass Beads
These Krobo beads are produced using the “core design” or “mold-inlaid” technique a centuries-old method still practiced by the Krobo people of Ghana. Crushed glass is placed into hand-carved clay molds and fused in kilns made from termite clay, often over open fires. Natural dyes, metal tools, and cassava stems are used to shape the center hole and add intricate surface designs.
Trade beads like these played a vital role in Africa’s history, once used as currency and as a symbol of identity, status, and trade across the continent. Today, they are treasured for their cultural richness, craftsmanship, and eco-friendly nature.
