History & Craftsmanship

Chevron beads-also called Rosetta beads-were first produced in Venice during the late 15th century and are among the most iconic trade beads in history. Created using the traditional drawn cane technique, multiple layers of molten glass in contrasting colors were molded into a star pattern, drawn into canes, sliced, and then ground or faceted to reveal their signature starburst ends.

Beads like this were exported to Africa during the height of European trade in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In African markets, these beads were highly valued and widely used as currency, as well as for ceremonial and ornamental purposes. The larger the bead, the higher its value-making this large 4-layer example particularly significant.

This bead is more than just decorative-it’s a tangible artifact of cross-cultural trade, artistic legacy, and global history.
