Beautiful Handmade Ghana Krobo Fancy Glass Beads - 24 1/4" Strand
Discover the vibrant charm of our powder glass beads, meticulously handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These exquisite beads are designed to imitate the elegance of old Fancy Venetian glass trade beads, bringing a touch of history and culture to your jewelry designs.
- Strand Length: 24 1/4" (61.5 cm)
- Bead Size: Approximately 10 mm in diameter
Crafted from recycled bottles and other glass items, these beads are transformed into fine powder before being molded into their beautiful forms. Each bead is a testament to the intricate craftsmanship and tradition of the Krobo people.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
Artisanal Technique
The creation of these fancy glass beads involves a unique technique perfected by the Krobo people of Ghana. The process begins with crushing glass bottles and other glass items into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully placed into molds, forming the base shape of the beads.
Decoration
What sets these fancy beads apart is their detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. Metal or wooden tools are often employed to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, enhancing their beauty and uniqueness.
Firing
Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This process fuses the glass powder and sets the designs in place, giving the beads their final, stunning form.
Significance of Trade Beads
Trade beads hold great historical and cultural significance in Ghana and across Africa. They were originally used as a form of currency and as a means of establishing trade relationships. Today, they continue to be cherished for their beauty and the rich heritage they represent.
