Authentic African Trade Beads: Fancy Translucent Powder Glass Beads
Discover the vibrant artistry of Kroboland with these stunning translucent powder glass beads, meticulously handmade by skilled artisans in Ghana, West Africa. These beads beautifully imitate the intricate designs of old Venetian "Fancy" trade beads, showcasing the timeless elegance of African craftsmanship.
- Strand Length: Approximately 21" (53.5 cm)
- Bead Size: 11 - 12 mm in diameter
Crafted from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, these beads are created by grinding the glass into powder and then molding it into exquisite shapes. Each bead is a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the Krobo people, making every strand a unique piece of art.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
Craftsmanship and Tradition
The people of Krobo in Ghana have perfected the technique of making these fancy glass beads. The process begins with the careful selection of glass fragments, which are then ground into fine powder. This powder is placed into clay molds and shaped into beads.
Intricate Decoration
What sets fancy beads apart is their detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They may use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, adding to their unique charm.
Firing Process
Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This fusing process solidifies the glass powder and sets the designs in place, giving the beads their final, beautiful form.
Trade beads like these have played a significant role in African culture and economy, often used in trade and as symbols of wealth and status. Today, they continue to be cherished for their beauty and cultural significance.
