Handmade African Brass Beads from Ghana – Lost Wax Technique 27.5" Strand

Handmade African Brass Beads from Ghana – Lost Wax Technique 27.5" Strand

Introducing a stunning strand of African brass beads crafted by the skilled artisans of the Ashanti people in Ghana, West Africa. These beads are created using the ancient lost wax technique, a time-honored method that ensures each bead is truly unique. The intricate process involves creating a wax mold for every bead, which is then destroyed after casting, making each one an original piece of craftsmanship.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

  • Strand length (bead to bead): 27 1/2" (69.5 cm)
  • Bead size: 10-21 mm in diameter

The lost wax technique, also known as investment casting, has been used for centuries across Africa, especially by the people of Ghana. This labor-intensive process starts with a wax model of the bead, which is then encased in clay. Once the clay hardens, the wax is melted and drained, leaving a cavity that is filled with molten brass. After cooling, the clay is broken apart to reveal the finished bead, and because the mold is destroyed, each bead is one-of-a-kind.

Brass beads hold significant cultural value in Ghana, symbolizing wealth, status, and spiritual meaning. Worn during special ceremonies, these beads are passed down through generations, cherished as both ornaments and heirlooms. By incorporating these handmade brass beads into your jewelry, you are continuing a tradition that spans centuries and connecting with the rich cultural heritage of Africa.
