The History and Value of Venetian Chevron Beads

Chevron beads, also known as Rosetta beads, originated in Venice on the island of Murano around the late 15th century. Artisans employed the cane drawing technique, layering colored glass to form canes which were then sliced, ground, and polished to unveil the distinct chevron or star patterns.

These beads were traded widely throughout West Africa beginning in the early 1500s. Prized for their beauty and symbolic significance, they were used as currency, adornment, and ceremonial items. Their age, craftsmanship, and cultural significance give them both historical and monetary value today.
