Introducing our beautiful strand of NEW powder glass African beads, handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland, Ghana, West Africa. These beads imitate the old Venetian bicone "KING" glass trade beads, showcasing a perfect blend of tradition and artistry.
- Strand Length: 26" (66 cm)
- Bead Size: 17-18 mm in diameter
Each bead is meticulously crafted from recycled glass bottles and other glass items. The glass is ground into a fine powder and then carefully molded to create these stunning beads. The entire process is done by hand, ensuring each bead is unique and of the highest quality.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
Technique and Cultural Significance
The artisans of Kroboland employ traditional techniques passed down through generations to produce these fancy glass beads. This process not only highlights their craftsmanship but also underscores the cultural and economic importance of trade beads in Ghana and across Africa.
Decoration
What sets fancy beads apart is their intricate decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create vibrant patterns and designs. Metal or wooden tools are often used to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, resulting in unique and elaborate designs.
Firing
Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This process fuses the glass powder and solidifies the designs, giving the beads their final, beautiful form. The result is a durable, colorful bead that embodies the spirit and skill of its makers.
