Experience the beauty and craftsmanship of African trade beads with our exquisite strand of new powder glass beads, meticulously handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads imitate the intricate designs of old Venetian fancy trade beads, offering a unique blend of tradition and artistry.

  • Strand length: 24 1/2" (62 cm)
  • Bead size: Approximately 7 mm in diameter

Each bead is made from recycled glass bottles and other glass items, which are ground into a fine powder and then shaped using molds to create these stunning beads. The entire process is done by hand, ensuring that each bead is unique.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

These fancy Krobo beads stand out due to their detailed decoration process. Artisans skillfully combine glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. Using metal or wooden tools, they etch or paint detailed motifs onto each bead, adding to their uniqueness.

The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln at high temperatures, fusing the glass powder and setting the designs in place. This firing process gives the beads their final form and lasting durability.

The technique of creating Krobo beads is a cherished tradition in Ghana, where the beads hold significant cultural and historical importance. Trade beads have been used for centuries in West Africa, not only as currency but also as symbols of social status and adornment. The craftsmanship involved in producing these beads reflects the rich heritage and skilled artistry of the Krobo people.
