Exquisite African Trade Beads - Handcrafted Powder Glass Beads from Ghana

Introducing a stunning strand of NEW powder glass African beads, masterfully crafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads beautifully imitate the classic Venetian fancy trade beads, making them a unique and vibrant addition to any collection.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 23 1/4" (59 cm)
  • Bead Size: 11-12 mm in diameter

Each bead is made from recycled bottles and other glass items, meticulously turned into powder and then molded to create these exquisite pieces. The beads are 100% handmade, showcasing the traditional craftsmanship of the Krobo people.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Craftsmanship of Krobo Beads

The creation of these fancy glass beads involves a unique technique perfected by the Krobo people of Ghana. The process begins with the crushing of recycled glass into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully placed into molds and fired in kilns to form the bead shapes.

Intricate Decoration and Firing

What sets these fancy beads apart is the detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They employ metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads. Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final form.

The Significance of Trade Beads in Ghana and Africa

Trade beads have played a crucial role in the history and culture of Ghana and Africa. They were historically used as a medium of exchange and as symbols of wealth and status. Today, they continue to hold cultural significance and are cherished for their beauty and craftsmanship.
