The Krobo glass beads are made using an eco-conscious process. Discarded glass bottles and other glass waste are ground into fine powder and carefully poured into hand-shaped molds. These molds are baked in traditional kilns, where the powder fuses into vibrant, textured beads a centuries-old art form unique to the people of Krobo.
The brass beads are made in the Ashanti region, particularly Kumasi, using the revered lost wax casting method. Each brass bead begins as a wax model, which is encased in clay. When heated, the wax melts away, leaving a mold into which molten brass is poured. The clay mold is destroyed after casting, making each bead a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
African trade beads have long served as currency, ornamentation, and symbols of status and identity across the continent. In Ghana, they continue to hold deep cultural significance and are used in ceremonies, rites of passage, and fashion. This strand celebrates that living tradition, blending heritage with artistry in every handmade piece.
