Introducing a stunning strand of new powder glass African beads, handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads beautifully imitate the intricate designs of old Venetian fancy trade beads, offering a touch of history and artistry in every piece.
- Strand length: Approximately 24 1/2" (62 cm) long
- Bead size: Approximately 11-12 mm in diameter
Each bead is meticulously made from recycled bottles and other glass items, which are ground into a fine powder and then molded into these exquisite shapes. The entire process is 100% handmade, ensuring that each strand is unique and of the highest quality.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
Artisan Techniques and Cultural Significance
The creation of these fancy Krobo glass beads is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Krobo people. Using traditional techniques, artisans first crush recycled glass into powder. This powdered glass is then carefully poured into clay molds to form the beads. What sets these beads apart is the detailed decoration process.
Decoration
Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. The beads are often adorned with motifs that are etched or painted using metal or wooden tools, making each bead a miniature work of art.
Firing
Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final, durable form. This firing process not only solidifies the beads but also enhances the colors, making them more vibrant and long-lasting.
Trade beads like these have played a significant role in African history, serving as a medium of exchange and a symbol of wealth and status. Today, they continue to be cherished for their beauty and cultural significance.
