Discover the exquisite beauty of our NEW powder glass African beads, meticulously handcrafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads are a stunning imitation of the traditional Venetian FANCY trade beads.

  • Strand Length: 24" (61 cm) long
  • Bead Size: 10 - 11 mm in diameter

Each bead is carefully crafted from recycled bottles and other glass items. These materials are ground into powder and then molded to create these beautiful beads. The entire process is 100% handmade, ensuring each bead is unique.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Artisan Technique and Cultural Significance

The production of these FANCY glass beads is a traditional craft in Krobo, Ghana. Artisans employ age-old techniques that have been passed down through generations. The process begins with the collection of discarded glass items, which are then crushed into a fine powder. This powder is meticulously poured into molds and shaped into beads.

Decoration

What sets these fancy beads apart is the detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They employ metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, adding to their uniqueness and beauty.

Firing

Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This process fuses the glass powder and sets the designs in place, giving the beads their final form. The result is a strand of beads that is not only beautiful but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Krobo people.

The Importance of Trade Beads in Africa

Trade beads have played a significant role in African history. They were used as a form of currency and for trade between different tribes and regions. Today, they continue to be a symbol of African culture and craftsmanship, cherished by collectors and jewelry makers worldwide.
