Introducing our exquisite strand of fancy powder glass beads, meticulously handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Kroboland, Ghana, West Africa. These beads, inspired by the traditional Venetian "Eye" trade beads, are a testament to the rich cultural heritage and craftsmanship of African trade beads.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 24 3/4" (63 cm)
  • Bead Size: Approximately 10-11 mm in diameter

Each bead is made from recycled bottles and other glass items, ground into powder and formed into molds to create these stunning beads. The beads are 100% handmade, showcasing the dedication and skill of the Krobo artisans.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Crafting Technique

The artisans of Kroboland employ a unique and intricate technique to produce these fancy glass beads. First, they meticulously crush recycled glass into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully placed into clay molds, shaped into the desired form.

Decoration Process

What sets these fancy beads apart is the detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They employ metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads, making each bead a unique piece of art.

Firing

The decorated beads are then fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final form and a beautiful finish.

Importance of Trade Beads

Trade beads have played a significant role in the history of Ghana and Africa. They were not only used as currency but also served as symbols of wealth, status, and cultural identity. The tradition of bead-making continues to thrive in Ghana, with Krobo beads being highly sought after for their beauty and cultural significance.
